The Course

The CFP – CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP) CERTIFICATION is recognized globally as the gold standard in personal financial planning with more than 170,000 Certified Financial Planner professionals worldwide. Administered by the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM) the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation demonstrates a financial planner’s commitment to education, professionalism and client-centered planning.

Candidates desiring to become a CFP professional must pursue a 4-module CFP programme with an approved CFP education provider, and take extensive examinations in the areas of financial planning, tax planning, insurance planning, investment planning, estate planning and retirement planning, as well as meet a range of requirements.

Pre-Requisites

1. A bachelor’s degree (any discipline) OR

2. SPM with credits and 5 years of relevant financial work experience


They can opt for Prior Learning Recognition Assessment (PLRA) – a multiple-choice test. Once passed, they are eligible to apply for CFP programme. Candidates are only allowed to register for the PLRA assessment 2 times and there must be a break of 6 months between the attempts.


MODULAR EXEMPTION & CHALLENGE STATUS (all applications are subject to FPAM's approval):


A) MODULAR EXEMPTION (Exempted from Module 1):


1. Active FiMM Members:

  • must pass CUTE/PRS examination;
  • Degree (OR Diploma plus 5 years of related financial planning work experience at the point of application)
  • must attend Tax Planning Workshop prior to attempting Module 4

2. Degree holder with any of the following:

  • Chartered Financial Practitioners (Namlifa)
  • MII Dip. In Financial Planning
  • Chartered Life Underwriters
  • Life Underwriters Training Council of Fellows
  • Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment
  • must attend Tax Planning Workshop prior to attempting Module 4

B) MODULAR EXEMPTION (Exempted from Modules 1 & 2):


3. Degree holder with any of the following:

  • Registered Financial Planners (MFPC)
  • Syariah Registered Financial Planners (MFPC)
  • must attend Tax Planning Workshop prior to attempting Module 4

C) CHALLENGE STATUS (only required to attempt Module 4):


Any of the following with 3 years of related financial planning work experience at the point of application:

  • Professional accountants (MIA, CPA (M), CPA(Aust)., AICPA, CA, ACCA, ICMA and AIA)
  • Chartered Secretaries (ICSA) & (Fellow of MACS)
  • Chartered Financial Consultants (ChFC) or Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA)
  • Masters (Business Admin / Finance / Economics / Accounting) from accredited universities
  • PhD (Business, Accounting or Economics) of Doctorate in Business Administration
  • Islamic Financial Planner (IFP)
